Rangedale Drainage Winning at Flemington

THE CLIENT: Victoria Racing Club

The Victorian Racing Club engaged Rangedale Drainage division by Mr. Gooding the manager of Australia’s most famous Flemington racecourse.

THE CHALLENGE:

Mr. Gooding’s racecourse maintenance team noticed some ground subsidence in different locations throughout the racecourse training areas and racing tracks. This was of enormous concern, as the Melbourne Cup race carnival was fast approaching with preparation at the racecourse already underway.

An urgent call from Mr. Gooding to Rangedale Drainage agreed that an urgent pipeline CCTV inspection of all the pipelines which run throughout and underneath the racecourse was needed to evaluate if the subsidence was being caused by defective pipelines.

THE RANGEDALE SOLUTION:

Once the CCTV inspection was completed, it was identified that numerous pipeline sections with rubber ring jointed pipelines had severe infiltration. This infiltration was caused by the ground conditions present at the Flemington racecourse. Excavation to repair the pipelines was not possible due to the enormous cost involved and the potential for disruptions during the race carnival period.

It was discussed and decided that Rangedale Drainage would install numerous Smart Lock pipe repairs to the identified defective sections of pipelines. Rangedale swung into action and installed Smart Lock repairs to pipelines from DN300 to DN525.

The manager at Rangedale noted, “It was a huge challenge, but the Smart Lock repair system was the only system which could have started and completed the whole project within the time frame required to cause no disruption to the racing carnival period. Some of the defective joints had severe infiltration, which was no problem for the Smart Lock to seal and more importantly repair.”

THE OUTCOME:

As well as the high infiltration, Rangedale’s installation crews had to deal with severe weather during the installation periods, the weather was not easy for the crews but the Smart Lock could still be installed due to the large diameter by-pass Smart Lock packers as well as the materials and resins which are used as part of the Smart Lock system.

Mr. Gooding, Manager of Flemington Racecourse, said, “I could not be more pleased with the results, after the first day of installing the Smart Lock, all of the concerns were eased and that we had made the right decision to install the Smart Lock repair system. It was amazing to see how the system worked to seal and repair the defects, it is even more pleasing knowing that they were supporting an Australian designed and made product.”
